03 — GLOSSARY & DEFINITIONS

Financial & Transaction Glossary

Compact definitions by activity. Use the categories below to understand a term; use Knowledge & Resources to understand the underlying mechanism.

SBLCStandby Letter of Credit

An independent bank undertaking issued in favour of a beneficiary to support a contractual or financial obligation. An SBLC does not itself constitute approval of financing or monetization.

BGBank Guarantee

A bank undertaking supporting specified payment or performance obligations under an underlying transaction. Applicable rules depend on the actual wording and structure.

LCLetter of Credit

A documentary payment undertaking commonly used in international trade, under which honour depends on a complying presentation under the terms of the credit.

DLCDocumentary Letter of Credit

A commercial term widely used for a documentary letter of credit. The precise instrument and applicable rules must be determined from the actual banking documentation.

MT760SWIFT guarantee / standby message

A SWIFT message type used in guarantee and standby workflows. Its use and legal effect depend on the transaction, instrument wording and participating institutions.

MT700Documentary credit issuance

A SWIFT message type used for issuance of a documentary credit.

04 — INSTITUTIONAL REFERENCES / VERIFY

Live official and institutional sources

Use current official registers and institutional gateways. Static ADSGI material must never replace a live sanctions, regulatory or bank-register check.

EXTERNAL SOURCE NOTICE You are leaving the ADSGI Resource Center. ADSGI does not control, endorse or guarantee third-party websites. Always verify current information directly with the official source.
05 — INTERNATIONAL TRADE & COMMODITY TRANSACTION MECHANICS

From contract structure to physical delivery and settlement

A transaction is not only a SPA or a banking instrument. This capability separates the contractual, documentary, physical, banking and title/risk flows that must remain coherent through execution.

02DOCUMENTARY FLOWBuyer · Seller · Banks · Logistics · Inspection · Certificates

CONTRACT ARCHITECTURE
PARTIESPRODUCTQUANTITYPRICE DELIVERYINSPECTIONPAYMENTDEFAULT / LAW
INCOTERMS / DELIVERY
FOBSeller delivers on board at the named port of shipment; contractual allocation must be read with the SPA and current ICC Incoterms® rules.
CFR / CIFSeller contracts carriage to destination; CIF also includes the contractually required insurance cover.
CPT / CIPCarriage-paid structures used across modes of transport; CIP includes insurance obligations.
OTHER TERMSThe correct term depends on cargo, transport mode, customs route and the negotiated allocation of obligations.

Incoterms allocate defined delivery obligations, costs and risks; they do not by themselves determine every contractual issue, including title transfer or payment mechanics.

Issuance of a banking instrument does not by itself establish successful physical performance, documentary compliance or final payment.

INSPECTION & CERTIFICATION

Inspection requirements must be transaction-specific. Depending on the commodity and contract they may cover quantity, weight, quality, purity, origin, loading condition, independent inspection or destination testing.

DO NOT CONFUSE Physical movement ≠ risk transfer ≠ title transfer ≠ payment. Each must be established by the contract, applicable delivery terms and transaction documents.
08 — GOLD TRANSACTION PATHWAY

Gold: from product identification to refinery settlement

This educational pathway is derived from ADSGI transaction-structuring experience and normalized for general use. Actual requirements depend on the SPA, jurisdiction, refinery, logistics provider and banks.
